FAQ’s & Glass Safety

MAJOR GLASS SAFETY CONCERNS

Frameless Glass safety is extremely important, and should be discussed between your installer and their client. A story broadcast on Today Tonight, which highlighted the need to know the source of your glass for your frameless glass shower, balustrade or pool fence, has triggered many questions from clients intending to have a frameless glass product installed.

There have been an increasing number of instances where toughened glass panels have shattered without warning, which have the potential to cause serious injuries. Click here for a special report from Channel 9’s A Current Affair and The Construction, Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU).

WHAT IS EUROGLASS DOING TO ENSURE GLASS SAFETY?

Euroglass Australia uses glass from a manufacturer who abides by the Australian Standards AS/NZ 2208-1996 and AS/NZ 2080-1996. To maintain certification throughout the year, the manufacturer is required to perform a break test on a piece of glass each hour, and keep records of the test for random scrutiny by the regulatory authorities. The data is available on a permanent database so that accurate records are readily available should anything happen to a piece of glass in the future. Euroglass Australia holds a QBCC License 49953.

WHERE IS THE GLASS MANUFACTURED?

Knowing and feeling certain about where the glass is manufactured will give you peace of mind.

HOW LONG HAS THE MANUFACTURER BEEN AROUND?

A good indication to your manufacturer’s glass quality is how long the company has been operating. This shows strength and position in a strictly regulated market.

IS THE MANUFACTURER FOLLOWING STRICT AUSTRALIAN STANDARDS?

Being able to follow the strict standards imposed by the regulatory bodies means that the outcome and glass quality is greater than many inferior imported sub-standard products.
There are always going to be developers and builders who may need to stick to a limited budget, so as a consumer this is something you need to question. Euroglass Australia has been in business since 1989 and the company prides itself on manufacturing and supplying Australian glass which follows strict Australian Glass Standards for all its residential and commercial projects.

WHY BUY AUSTRALIAN MADE GLASS?

There is always a reason why certain things cost more or less than other items that look identical.

This is also the case with glass, especially processed toughened glass. Would you buy a car knowing that one day the wheels might fall off? Would you fly in a plane knowing that one day a wing might fall off?

The same applies to imported toughened glass. Would you buy it knowing that one day it could simply shatter without warning?

Glass with more microscopic impurities has a far greater chance of spontaneously shattering than more purified glass. Raw glass is made up of a specific mix of a number of elements. If that mix is out of balance or has too high a level of other impurities in it, it could become unsafe in a processed toughened state at a later date.

Buyer beware when choosing toughened glass products. Play it safe and stick with what is proven quality and BUY AUSTRALIAN MADE.
